Seven years after North Carolina legislators voted to move mental health care toward private community providers, patients with mental illness and their families are still waiting for stable and reliable mental health care services. In Shadows is a documentary Web site dedicated to telling the stories of those caught in the middle of a broken system.

Nestled amongst some of Appalachia's tallest peaks, the scenic lands surrounding Waynesville, NC figure prominently in our state's cultural identity — as much for the people as for the majesty of the hazy hilltops. These hills have shaped many distinctive North Carolina traditions, from mountain ballads to moonshine. While the region is rapidly changing, the rugged wildness of the mountains and autonomous spirit of the residents still thrive.

Along North Carolina's southern coastline lie the subtropical Brunswick islands, which span five barrier islands and 45 miles of beautiful beaches. During the 5th annual Carolina Photojournalism Workshop, students from the University of North Carolina explored the culture and traditions of North Carolina's rapidly-changing Brunswick Islands.

Since the Census began tracking poverty rates in 1970, the national rate has never dropped below 11.1 percent. Today, 37 million Americans, or 12.6 percent, live under the poverty line. Many more fight to stay just above it. For some, financial woe is temporary — for others it is a lifelong battle. It begs the question: is poverty an inevitable condition in our modern global economy or can we do better?

Nuevas Fronteras is the multimedia component of Carolina del Norte, an onoing, large-scale media project by the University of North Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communication that seeks to explore the impact of North Carolina's growing Latino population. From 1990 to 2008, the number of Latinos living in the state increased by nearly 600 percent.
